The following statements from the purchase page are contradictory (assuming 1.5 will be out earlier than the end of 2007):

"The license never expires and includes 12 months of updates."

"Considerable code revisions for compatibility with new Joomla versions (i.e. 1.5) will entail an additional fee for current license holders."

If I buy jReviews for 1.0.12 today for $80, when do you expect the 1.5 version to be released and how much will I have to pay for the upgrade?

Good point.

There will be an additional fee for 1.5 whether you are still within your 12 month upgrade period or not. The work required for a 1.5 version will be tremendous and does not fall under a regular upgrade. Regular upgrades are for bug fixes and new features, while a 1.5 compatible version is for a completely different platform. I will be fair though, if I find I can make the current version work with just a few hours of work, then there's no considerable code revisions and you get your update if you are within your update period.

I am not going to put a price to it just yet, but I can assure you it will be significantly lower than purchasing a new license. I will say 50% or less so it's not so unclear and you can quote me on this later on. I cannot put release date for a 1.5 compatible version, because I trully have no idea when it will be ready. I am not working on it yet because I am working towards having a stable version for Joomla 1.0.x. No critical bugs have been identified, but I want to fix the ones that have been found. After that I will assess the state of Joomla 1.5, which changes daily to see whether I am ready for it or not.

Right now the the 12 month upgrade extension is priced at $40, and of course you only pay if there's a valuable upgrade after your upgrade period expires.

So to summarize there are 2 hypothetical scenarios:

1) You buy today and 1.5 compatible version is released 6 months from now. You pay the 1.5 upgrade fee and have 6 months left of free upgrades.

2) You buy today and 13 months pass until a new version is released. You pay the 1.5 upgrade fee and get the new version but have no access to subsequent updates unless you pay the 12 month extension as well.

I have to see what the license system will allow me to do, but whatever error I make on thinking about this for the future will be at the client's benefit.
