Is there some convenient tool one could use to convert a set of articles (plain text files) into the appropriate CSV format, besides manually copying and pasting in Excel and then exporting from there?

If they are already in the database, you can use phpMyAdmin to export the tables to excel or CSV.

No, what I am referring to is when you have several articles on your hard drive as separate .txt files.

I have tried googling for an application that would assist in formatting these separate files into one CSV file needed for the Import tool. I have had no luck so far...

Basically it would be something that would recognize the first line of text as the title and the rest of the text as the body.

I thought it wouldn't be that easy. I don't know of any tools, but I Googled it and found some tools that might make it easier for you:
