What is the difference between content and review field type? When should be used?

Content fields are part of an items/entry/product description. As if you are building a catalog and what to add many different specs to each product in the catalog. Content fields are also searchable using advanced search.

Review fields are part of the user/editor review questionnaire, together with the ratings and comments. You can use them to create surveys about the particular item/entry/product that users will be reviewing.

Hi Alejandro,

I'm strugling to understand the difference too. So please tell me if I got it right...

I want to build a book reviews section on a website. For this I need to create 2 field groups:

1) one with the fields for book descriptions = content fields
2) and one with the fields for book reviews = review fields

With the content fields I create a form which site members/editors can use to submit a book for review. And with the review fields I create a form which will be displayed when other members review the book.

Is that correct?

Then also...

Say I want these books sorted by topic - education, fiction, fairy tales etc. Where do I make this distinction? Is it in a radio list in the content fields or is it in the Joomla core section/category management (section = books / category = education/fiction/fairy tales)?

Your component is VAST in it's options. I'm just trying stuff out at the moment, but I haven't formed a mental picture yet of how this all links together, so apologies in advance if I'm asking the obvious here. Too me it's not obvious just yet...

Thanks,
Patricia

Exactly!

You could use a lineal approach. Put all the books in a single category and then just use one of your content fields as a virtual category. Then you can use the custom fields module to create the list of links, or dropdown list of categories for users to browse. If you use a multipleselect list for the virtual category, you can even assign a book to more than one category. As an example, look at the brand modules on the link below. There's one with links and one with a select list. That's what the fields module can do.

Another alternative is the one you also mentioned, using a tree structure and using the Joomla sections/categories to classify the books. In the end it's you that needs to figure out what works best Smiley

Okay, so if I want to be able to assign 1 book to several categories, I need the first (lineal) approach and if I don't want that, I can use the joomla core section/cats?

It's dizzying...

I shut down the site to rethink all the options. I must say, if I'm beginning to grasp the potential of your component, it seems it makes a whole bunch of other components redundant.

I'm developing a site for a magazine which is run mostly by digibeet volunteers and the editors are having a really hard time understanding how to contribute an article using the default joomla option to submit content. 2 textareas, a complicated system to insert images, meta data, publication options - it's too much!

I looked at blogg-x, but that too isn't intuitive enough...

I'm hoping I can use jReviews also to create a simple form for submitting articles. Anyway, mind spinning - will look further into this after giving the neurons a break!

Thanks,
Patricia
