Title: Can jReview do this?
Post by: ryan_marsh on June 24, 2008, 01:07:38 AM
I'm looking for an extension that will allow me to cross link categories and have items that exist in multiple categories. I also need to be able to rate and review them.

For example, say I had a clothing designer, and the designer was in several boutiques. I'd want the designer article to show a link to the boutique article for every boutique that sells his designes . And vice-versa, a given boutique's article would have links to the designer article for each designer it carries. If a designer was removed from a boutique, or boutique from a designer the links would be automatically updated.

Lets also say that the designer might make shoes and hats. I'd like for the designer to show up when the user is looking at shoe designers, or hat designers. But I'd also like to be able to link from the designer's article to the shoe category so the user can then see all the other designers that make shoes.

Which extension should I be using? Can jReviews do something this complex?

The only thing remotely similar you can do with jReviews is to forget about the traditional sense of the word category and use it only in conjunction with a tagging or virtual category approach.

1) You create your main section with designer and boutique categories.
2) You create a multiple select list for boutiques, which are somewhat redundant for boutique names used in titles. And assign this field to designers. When a new designer is created you can choose the boutiques and have them show up as links. You can modify those links so they work as a search link showing the list page with the designer, not the designer detailed page itself.
3) To have designer articles show up in a boutique you'd have to use the related items module that comes with Joomla and make sure to fill the meta keywords for both designer and boutique.
4) Shoes and hats. Use checkbox or multiple select custom fields to list what type of items a boutique carries and works similar to the other field.

This isn't a perfect solution and you'll need to work on it, perhaps customize a few things here and there, but it might be a good start. Download the trial and check it out. Or play with the demo.
