Title: jReviews 2.0 finally released!
Post by: Alejandro on May 16, 2008, 11:12:26 PM
I am very happy to announce the release of jReviews 2.0, which has been in the works for several months. I hope you like it :)

1) jReviews 2.0 is a complete re-write of jReviews 1.2.x using an MVC (model-view-controller) framework derived from CakePHP (http://www.cakephp.org). The View and Controller functionality remains very similar to that of Cake, but the Model is not. For anyone wishing to get familiarized with the file structure and framework, the CakePHP website is a good resource.

2) The functionality, database and configuration remain the same as in jReviews 1.2.10, so upgrading to jReviews 2.0 is possible.

3) jReviews 2.0 is compatible with Joomla 1.0.x, Joomla 1.5 (natively and in legacy mode), Mambo 4.6.x.

4) The template system has been replaced with a php theme engine based on the MVC framework. This means none of the previous templates based on patTemplate will work with jReviews 2.0. Three themes are bundled with this version and one of them is for dark templates.

5) The urls generated by jReviews have changed to make them friendlier even without a SEF component and thus easier to convert to sef when a component is used. Integration with SEF components is still pending.

6) So far only the component and a listings and reviews module have been released. The rest of the modules, CB plugins and addons will be developed soon.

7) This is a beta version, not intended for production sites. If you use it in a production site it's at your own risk. I will fix bugs and do (6) as soon as possible, but I am not responsible for your production site. There will most likely be code changes before jReviews 2.0 becomes stable.

For now, jReviews 2.0 will only be available to paying customers. jReviews is a free upgrade as long as your upgrades package is active. Otherwise you need to review it to get access to the download. jReviews comes encoded in both ionCube and Zend, however the Zend version only works in php5 and with Zend Optimizer v3.3 and higher.

The jReviews 2.0 demo site is at http://demo2.reviewsforjoomla.com

I forgot, to mention I haven't revised any of the non-english language files. I will do this in subsequent releases to add the missing constant definitions. If you would like to complete any of the language files then please submit your revised versions and I'll include them in the next releases.

Hi,

I'm a new fan of your products and it seems I will be the first to congratulate you for this new version !
I created my first Joomla site two month ago and now ... I'm waiting this "jReviews 2.0". I hope it's will be the final touch of my work, but, to be sure, I would like to use the Trial  Version.

Do you have an idea or a date for this (beta) Trial 2.0 ??

Thanks a lot ... and really great job !

JM

First I need to see how much work this creates for me in terms of support for existing customers before I start supporting trial users. In the end I lose as well, but I really can't handle the additional workload right now. I am just being realistic.

It's a beta release. Keep in mind everyone new to jReviews that when you purchase you get both the stable version and the new beta. I am not trying to force the beta on anyone, but I am also not going to pretend it's stable. I've been fixing bugs for the past couple of weeks, but only now that it's available to a wider audience will different bugs come up. For instance there were no installation issues before, and now I've already received a few reports of installation issues. After a few rounds of bug fixes, it might be possible to call it a release candidate and then move forward with stable. I am not sure how long, but hopefully not too long.

Alejandro thanks for the new public beta...the changes sounds great.

One question though (I couldn't find an answer for it):
In the past you've mentioned that you're going to switch from Blueflames/Phil's xajax javascript framework. Is it done in the 2.0 version ?

We have so much troubles with xajax...I've had to ask that  :)

What I said is the mambot/plugin would no longer be necessary, but xajax would still be used. And this is exactly what I've done. jReviews now runs without the xajax mambot, but it is also compatible with it for those users that run extensions that make use of the mambot/plugin.

Congratulations. I've just barely scratched the new demo, but I already like several of the changes I've seen.

Big congrats Alejandro looks really nice.

Talking to partners to see if we purchase demo now or wait forthe trial as the one of the main parts we need is the Advanced search module for custom search/filter forms!

understand your waiver

There will most likely be code changes before jReviews 2.0 becomes stable.

But this is not likely to be any thing major as it would only be files overwriting existing files I hope.

While this is beta would give us time to develop the templates etc for our production sites.

So I will keep checking back to see what progress is made.  Fully understand you need to get the basics done first and you are a man band.

Again thank you for jReviews 2.0

That is correct. I just want it to be clear that this is not a production-ready version and not all modules/addons are available. If you want to use it to start with the development of your site and the jReviews theme, then that's fine because that part will not change or if it changes at all it will be minor.
