How to remove (#) in Directories Module

I'm trying to remove the listing count in the directories module. I tried setting both $showCategoryLinks and $showDirectoryLinks to false, but it had no effect (I did clear the file registry & cache).

Try adding this line inside php tags at the top of the module theme file:

$this->Config->dir_cat_num_entries = false;
